EcSOD: This can save your life

The EcSOD Enzyme, How to Prevent Vascular Diseases

As you participate in physical activity, chances are you are doing so for potential benefits to your quality of life. Regardless if you are training for how you look, how you feel, or both, you have been told and known the positive impact fitness can have on your life. When we participate in movement, there is a lot going on. Our entire entity is working together to perform tasks that help us reach our goals. We will use our aerobic and anaerobic systems, strength and conditioning, stability, balance, and core in our movements. We will sweat, be out of breath, feel tired during and feel amazing after the workout is done. While we are aware of these core outcomes of movement, our bodies are hard at work with internal contributions we are mostly unaware of such as the creation of white blood cells, immune boosting, complex metabolic processes, and the creation of enzymes. All of these outcomes are positive and impact our state of being more than we realize. Enter the enzyme EcSOD…

EcSOD stands for Extracellular Oxide Dismutase. It is an enzyme our body produces when we sustain aerobic activity for 20 minutes or more. This enzyme is particularly important for our health because it regulates our vascular system. When we produce EcSOD through activity, we are releasing the superoxide (O2) in our vascular system as well as regulating Nitric Oxide (NO) in our heart, lungs, kidneys, blood vessel wall, and placenta. This is crucial to our health because O2 and NO cause oxidative stress and excess of these compounds is the culprit of many vascular diseases. The diseases caused from overload of these compounds include Hypertension, heart failure, and strokes, all of which are some of the most common causes of death in the United States.

EcSOD is so important that it is even being implemented by gene transfers, where the enzyme is injected into one's bloodstream to prevent these diseases. However, there is no need to inject it because we can create it by participating in physical activity. As we discussed previously, most of us work out for appearance or feelings, but neglect to give the functions of our body recognition. Movement provides so much more that we are unaware of, including these complex chemical productions and balances. Here are my suggestions to produce EcSOD and to continue to enjoy your fitness journey:

Find an activity you love!
Find an activity that is aerobic in nature and that you can see your self participating in 3 to 5 days per week. This activity doesn’t mean time on a treadmill or equipment, you can partake in a sport, hop in the pool, or hit anything that requires prolonged movement. You can even get outside and soak up some sunshine and vitamin D! (more on vitamins in the next blog).

Focus on non-aesthetic goals and long term goals
When you focus on the long term, you are more likely to keep active for the duration of your life. Short term goals come and go, they change rapidly. If you focus on staying mobile and being healthy in your old age, your efforts will be sustained!
Make it about yourself
Fitness can be a great escape where you can focus on your body, mind, and spirit. Dedicate time for yourself every day to be in this headspace, then you are truly doing it for you. It will start to feel great, become a habit, and eventually it will become something you can not wait to do for yourself.

I hope you all enjoyed this post on EcSOD and the basic science behind this amazing enzyme. As always, comment your thoughts or any topic you would like me to touch on. Until next time!
