5 Ways a Wellness Program Can Increase your Business’ Revenue

Annually, businesses lose a good amount of their revenue due to employee health.  Between health insurance, sick days, and overall productivity, a lot of potential yearly growth can be left on the table.  Thankfully there is a solution to improve employee health and add massive gains to company revenue, and it comes in the form of wellness programs.

Cost Compared to ROI

For every dollar a company with 50 or more employees makes, roughly %46 percent of that dollar goes to health and wellness costs.  These costs can range from everything between preventable medical conditions to overall motivation to perform in the workplace.  Wellness programs offer a means to lower that %46 percent takeaway and increase the revenue of the business.  On average, companies that participate in wellness programs pay slightly under $10 per month per employee, and they are rewarded in their participation by a large increase in revenue.  For example, smaller companies like CP Advanced Solutions reported over $250,000 in savings over a 5-year period from reductions in health expenditures and premiums, while larger companies like Johnson & Johnson reported over $250 million in savings in an even smaller time frame.

Keep in mind that these initial ROI numbers are just related to physical health and conditions.  The world of wellness runs much deeper than just this one aspect.  When you account for other elements of health and wellness, the dollar amount of savings can run even higher.

Productivity

Another element that wellness programs aim to improve is employee productivity.  Every employee is human, this gift means that they all encounter their own unique challenges and experiences.  Elements such as depression, personal hardships, self-talk, fatigue, and many other components contribute to their performance while working.  This is another element that wellness programs strive to help improve.

If a program can help an employee on an individual level and improve things such as their confidence, self-belief, and overall mood, they will perform more efficiently and even be grateful to their company for providing the opportunity.  Overall, health and wellness programs are seen by many as a luxury item which often keeps them from some much-needed self-care.  They also do not always know what to do in the worlds of mental health and fitness and often require outside assistance.  If such a program is provided for them, their gratitude can be transformed into loyalty to their company alongside increased performance.  This adds to employee retention and longevity as well as creating new heights as to what the employee can accomplish.

Absentee Rate

Did you know that on average, employees miss 2.8 days more than their allotted sick days and PTO?  This number also significantly increases with age of the employee as well as employees 40 years and over average 4.1 extra missed days annually.  This missed time is a hit to the business as it can delay projects, deadlines, and impede the daily workflow.

This is another element that wellness programs are designed to handle.  Since people miss work for both physical and mental reasons, the goal of the wellness program is to not only improve the physical health of the employee, but the mental strength as well.  If the number of days missed is reduced, the business will receive even more in annual savings and ROI for participating in the program.

Disease Management

Although there are conditions that are inherited and must be managed, most conditions are preventable.  They are an outcome of a lifestyle and not genetically passed down.  These conditions include things like Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, emphysema, and obesity.  All of these things and others are a direct product of lifestyle elements.  The graph below shows additional annual health care costs per person for the elements listed above and the lifestyle choices of smoking and inactivity.

The good news is these conditions are also reversible through lifestyle changes.  Wellness programs provide the accountability and direction to become healthy which is much needed because these changes can be big and often intimidate people from starting their journey towards health.

Preventative Education

Wellness programs provide employees with the knowledge to fix and prevent unhealthy lifestyles and conditions.  This way the employees feel comfortable with their abilities to stay on a healthy path through any trials and obstacles they may face.  A great wellness program will teach its participants about nutrition, exercise techniques, injury prevention, disease prevention, and provide resources for mental health.  They also give out a variety of content ranging from eBooks to helpful videos, and personal access to a coach.  Many lifestyle changes can feel drastic and overwhelming, so it is important to have all the necessary resources to optimize employee success and the results of saving the business money.
