Is your Company Spending too Much on Healthcare?

View Webinar

For the duration of this decade, we have experienced strong messages for personal health in the forefront.  Everywhere you go from public transportation and dining, your place of work, the airport, sporting events, and even while just walking around town, messages to encourage you to be safe and sanitary exist everywhere.

I am not solely talking about COVID-19, but it has acted as a catalyst for public health information.  The thing is, we have had a growing public health crisis for decades now, and it is not taking the form of a virus.

As COVID passes, another virus will appear, it is just the way of nature.  Throughout human history and even this millennium, there have been several new and concerning viruses that draw the attention of the globe.  But there are other aspects of health that have been a concern throughout these new and recurring viruses, and it continues to get worse.

The number of obese American adults is at an all-time high of 42.4 percent (1.5 percent since our last article in 2020). Adults who experience depression and anxiety are fast approaching 10%, and almost half of all adult Americans (47% as of 2021) have some level of hypertension, which remains the number one killer in our country.

Hypertension is an important topic to know about because it is layered. Although it takes up a small percent of the chart below, it is an outcome of other factors and is fatal. There are numerous behaviors such as inactivity, smoking, and diet that cause hypertension to be prevalent in our lives.

And the worst part is, these other aspects of health are costing your company money.

For every dollar a company makes (that has 50 or more employees), 44% of each dollar is being spent on health care costs.  A study from The New England Journal of Medicine shows that on average an employee will use $5,813 on medical costs annually. This study further breaks down to show these specific behaviors impact the total.

Luckily things can be turned around.

The same study relates changes in activity levels to gains in profit.  An employee who exercises 3-5 days a week will on average only use $4,500 annually on medical, a dramatic $1,300 difference.  When you add in the mental benefits of this behavior, employees also miss less time not just due to physical health, but also through having higher energy levels and motivation.  It sounds great right?  So why is it so difficult to get people onto a program for their health and stay proficient at using it?
