You look over at the clock that reads 2:30 AM. You start to panic and apply pressure on yourself to fall asleep as you have to be up in just a few hours. This additional pressure makes it even harder to fall asleep so you must face a busy day on fumes…
You are doing just fine in a social setting, but something happens. Something ignites a trigger within you that makes you feel extreme discomfort. You can feel your heart rate increase, you can feel a temperature shift and notice your body becoming shaky and anxious. You have to get out of this situation to be able to breathe…
Something has just occurred that is out of your control, and it feels like an intense weight holding you down. Even though this occurrence is beyond your control, and you have the skills and means to handle it, it still feels crushing as an extreme set back or deterrent. This feeling feels like a cage of panic and fear…
Our anxiety can take on these and many other forms. Chances are that one of these situations feels all too familiar to you or has caused you to think about another example of anxiety’s presence in your life.
Never fear though, because there are things in our power that can help us through these anxious struggles. In this article, I will display 5 techniques that have greatly helped me through my struggles with anxiety taught to me by therapists and spirituality experts. I greatly hope that these methods help you and cause a positive impact on your self-growth and day to day life. So, let us dive in.
Accept that Anxiety is a Lifelong Battle
This is listed first because what is most important is that we stop looking at anxiety as something to be defeated. The truth is, anxiety as well as depression are something that all humankind will experience from time to time, some just more than others. This means that the best we can do is manage it. So yes, it is something to manage, but there are aspects to anxiety that can be beautiful as they enhance parts of yourself. Take time to think about this element. For example, when I look at my own experience with anxiety, I realize that anxiety has improved my empathy for others, has given me the desire to pursue creative outlets to manage it, and become more self-aware. Acceptance instead of fighting it will help you turn the tables and make something that is beneficial to you.
Understand how Anxiety can be a Benefit to you
In the first tip, we touched on some ways that having anxiety has been spun into a positive thing for your experience. Now let’s spend time discussing how it can benefit you, as everyone is different. In my case it has led to creative outlets such as art and music, but this does not mean that these are the only outlets. For another it may mean trying something new, something active, helping others, writing, creating a supportive online community, and so much more. Take a moment to think about your specific experience with anxiety and ponder how you can turn that into something positive for yourself and potentially for others who can relate.
Practice Breathing Techniques and Meditation
This tip can be a game changer. Breathing techniques are not only something you can practice at home, but they are also really useful in a stressful or anxious situation. They can be used as an inward retreat to calm your anxiety and get yourself back in the present moment. Furthermore, meditation can also impact you in another positive way. Meditation can open up your imagination, so you can visualize and prepare to handle possible stressful situations. When you can get deep in meditation and put yourself through a scenario, if and when it happens in your reality you will have the feeling that you have been there before and the anxiety will be limited or even non-existent. Meditation will also help you to understand yourself better. It will help you be aware of your thoughts more frequently and dive into your subconscious mind so you can find deeper meanings and root causes to your anxiety. Stay Grounded in the Moment
Every time you are having an anxious experience, take a mental step back and remind yourself that it will pass. Nothing is forever, and what you are experiencing is just another small bump in the road of life. Also remind yourself that most situations are interpreted in our minds as much worse than they really are. Take a moment to recall a situation where you played something out in your mind and it caused stress, but in the end it was not nearly as bad as you imagined. This happens to me all the time. Reminding yourself of these things allows you to be more in flow, just rolling with the punches and creating awareness of the moment and your surroundings. The more present you can be, the less anxiety, stress, and other strong emotions can impact your internal reality.
Embrace what Makes you Uniquely you
As touched on in the top of this article, everyone is different and unique. Everyone will experience anxiety, but feel it differently or have different triggers. I really believe that when you understand yourself and embrace your emotions, you can turn all of these negative experiences and emotions into something magical. There is a potential gift underneath every unturned stone. Instead of running from anxiety, face your fears and acknowledge it. I promise it can lead to amazing gifts such as self understanding, passion, and new found capabilities.
Conclusion
Anything that may be challenging, difficult, trying, painful, stressful, (you name it) can be transitioned into something beautiful and awe inspiring. The world is filled with examples. Think of all the people who came from nothing and achieved their goals. Think of the athletes who went through unthinkable injuries to return to triumph. All the hardships, tragedies, new experiences and encounters all can lead to growth and advancement if you can see it in that light. Nothing has been gained without failure and nothing has grown without first watering the seeds. Allow yourself to embrace your thoughts, emotions, and experiences as doing so is watering the seed of yourself. Greatness awaits you if you decide to go for it.
